G.A.F.E. Collaborative Billboards


We are a Google Apps for Education School District or GAFE.  That means we use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites and Google Documents for collaboration.

So how can students collaborate besides working on a presentation together or assigning sections of work that are then linked together?  
How can Google Apps be used in a blended learning classroom?

One way is to use Google Slides as a collaborative billboard.

4 Steps to Use A Collaborate Billboard
1. A video, chart, image, piece of text or any other resource is inserted in the middle of the slide.
2. An open ended question with multiple answers is placed on the slide.
3. Share the link to the Google presentation or embed it on your site. (To embed: Open site, Insert>Drive>Form)
3. Students insert a text box and include answer, thoughts, opinions, etc. along with initials.

Why?
1. It is an example of blended learning to be done independently at school or at home.
2. All students are held accountable to contribute.
2. Student can read one another's responses to extend their own thinking/views.
3.  It is a quick tool for formative assessment.
4.  Fellow students are an authentic audience.
5. It can lead to a class discussion on the next day to link new information while reviewing previous content.
6. It is an easy way to incorporate higher level questioning skills to promote deeper thinking.

Here is an example of using a collaborative billboard during independent guided reading time. After reading Chapter 18 students logged on to Chromebooks independently and completed the following billboard that was on the teacher's webpage. Older students could then meet to discuss the responses, similar to a lit circle, while other students could meet  with the teacher to discuss the billboard the next day.  Not enough room on one slide for all the student text boxes, duplicate the slide a few times and students can respond on any of the slides.
